Since their debut as part of the National Concert Hall’s ‘Tradition Now’ series in 2015, world-renowned musicians Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Garth Knox have sculpted a uniquely personal soundworld that draws on a rich shared musical heritage, spanning a wealth of traditional, medieval and contemporary music. This collaboration draws on the "countless intersections that prick the edges of traditional and contemporary music" (Irish Times) and has received rave reviews in all of the limited performances the duo have given to date.

CAOIMHÍN Ó RAGHALLAIGH

Garth Knox born in Dublin in 1956, is at the forefront of new music in several different fields. He is one of today’s leading performers of contemporary music, and his formative experience first as a member of Pierre Boulez’s Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris and then as violist of the Arditti Quartet in London combine to give him a unique and comprehensive grasp of the cutting edge of music. Stimulated by the practical experience of working on a personal level with composers such as Boulez, Ligeti, Berio, Stockhausen, Xenakis and many others he now channels and expands this energy when writing his own music.

In his solo career, his interests spread wide across medieval, baroque and folk music (especially Irish traditional), and he is also active in the field of improvisation, collaborating with artists like Fred Frith. His compositions draw on all these rich and diverse sources.

Garth Knox’s solo and ensemble compositions have been played all over Europe, USA and Japan. Irish and European groups have repeatedly requested commissions and the Kronos Quartet recently commissioned and played a piece by him at Carnegie Hall. After a series of highly successful solo albums on ECM, his latest release is on John Zorn’s Tzadik label.

Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh makes music on a 10-string fiddle called the hardanger d'amore, and travels the world as a solo musician, in various duos, and as a member of two bands, The Gloaming and This is How We Fly. He has performed on some of the most beautiful stages in the world, including the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall and the Lincoln Center. He has made fifteen recordings to date, ranging from quite traditional to fairly out there, and continues to explore the region where traditional music begins to disintegrate.

Caoimhín is known as a collaborator, having worked with artists such as Laurie Anderson, Amiina and Vincent Moon. He has made music for theatre and film, including music for the Oscar-nominated movie Brooklyn and Volker Schlondorff's Return to Montauk.
